Description

A comforting and delicious Chicago style deep dish pizza with layers of gooey cheese, savory sausage, and flavorful tomato sauce all nestled in a flaky, buttery crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup cooked Italian sausage, crumbled
  • 1 cup pepperoni slices
  • 2 cups chunky tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Whisk together flour, cornmeal, salt, and Italian seasoning in a large bowl. Stir in melted butter and yeast mixture until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Roll out the dough and press it into a greased cast iron skillet, pushing it up the sides.
  7. Layer mozzarella cheese across the base, followed by crumbled sausage and pepperoni slices.
  8. Pour chunky tomato sauce over the toppings and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and aromatic.
  10. Allow to cool for a few minutes, slice, and serve hot.

Notes

Make-ahead tip: Prepare the dough a day in advance and refrigerate overnight. You can also use an air fryer for a quicker cooking method.
