Description

Ingredients

  • 1 homemade or store-bought pie crust
  • 2 cups fruit (apples or berries)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch or flour
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust: In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbs form. Gradually add ice-cold water until dough holds together. Wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  3. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to fit your pie dish, about 1/8 inch thick. Place it in the dish and trim excess.
  4. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, mix your fruit with sugar, spices, and a thickener like cornstarch. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  5. Fill the pie: Spoon the filling into your crust, arranging the fruit beautifully.
  6. Top it off: Roll out and cut your top crust, placing it over the filling. Cut slits for steam to escape and brush the top with egg wash.
  7. Bake: Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes. Reduce to 350°F (175°C) for an additional 25-30 minutes until filling bubbles and crust is golden brown.
  8. Cool for at least 2 hours before serving warm or at room temperature.
