Ingredients
Each ingredient in this recipe plays an important role, both in flavor and in your dog’s overall wellbeing. Let’s take a closer look.
Plain Unsweetened Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt forms the creamy, protein-rich base of this recipe. It’s thicker and higher in protein than regular yogurt, and it contains probiotics that may support healthy digestion. It’s essential to choose a plain, unsweetened variety, as flavored yogurts often contain added sugars or artificial sweeteners that aren’t suitable for dogs.
Fresh or Frozen Blueberries
Blueberries are often called a superfood, and for good reason — they’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber. Both fresh and frozen blueberries work well in this recipe, making it easy to whip up a batch no matter the season. Frozen blueberries can even add a slightly thicker texture to the finished mixture.
Ripe Banana
Banana adds natural sweetness, a smooth texture, and a boost of potassium and fiber. Choosing a ripe banana, with a few brown speckles on the peel, ensures the best flavor and the smoothest blend.
Natural Peanut Butter (Xylitol-Free)
Peanut butter adds richness and a flavor most dogs absolutely love. It’s critical, however, to choose a natural peanut butter that is completely free of xylitol — a sugar substitute that is highly toxic to dogs, even in very small amounts. Always read the ingredient label carefully before adding peanut butter to any homemade dog treat.
Optional Add-Ins
To customize this recipe or boost its nutritional profile, consider mixing in any of the following:
- Pumpkin purée – Adds fiber and a mild, earthy sweetness.
- Ground flaxseed – A source of omega-3 fatty acids that can support healthy skin and coat.
- Unsweetened applesauce – Enhances sweetness and smoothness naturally.
- Unsweetened coconut water – Adds extra hydration, which is especially helpful in warm weather.
- Finely shredded carrots – Contributes fiber, texture, and beta-carotene.
These add-ins are entirely optional, but they offer an easy way to keep the recipe feeling fresh and varied if you plan to make it regularly.
Instructions
Add the Greek yogurt, blueberries, banana, and peanut butter to a blender or food processor. Blend on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, with no visible chunks of blueberry or banana remaining. This typically takes about 30–60 seconds, depending on the strength of your blender.
If you’re using any optional add-ins — pumpkin purée, ground flaxseed, applesauce, coconut water, or shredded carrots — gently stir them into the blended mixture until fully incorporated. This step allows you to customize the recipe based on what you have on hand or what your dog particularly enjoys.
Spoon the mixture into small paper cups, silicone cups, or reusable dog-safe treat cups. The cup format makes this recipe especially convenient, since it eliminates the need for specialty molds and creates naturally portioned servings.
For an extra special touch, place a few whole blueberries on top of each cup before freezing. This not only adds visual appeal but also gives your dog a little extra burst of flavor and texture in every bite.
Place the filled cups in the freezer and freeze for 4–6 hours, or until they are completely firm all the way through. Try to keep the cups level and undisturbed during this time so they freeze evenly.
Once fully frozen, you can either remove the pup cups from their containers or serve them directly in the cup as a mess-free frozen treat. If you’re not serving immediately, transfer them to a covered, freezer-safe container for longer storage.
