- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 egg
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Slice the onions into thick rings about 1/2 inch in size and separate them into a bowl.
- Prepare the flour mixture by whisking together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl.
- Make the buttermilk mixture by beating the egg and mixing it with buttermilk until combined.
- Dip each onion ring in the buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the flour mixture.
- Double coat the onion rings by dipping them back into the buttermilk and then into the breadcrumbs.
- Heat oil in a frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the coated onion rings in small batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Drain the rings on paper towels and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
For a healthier option, try baking the rings at 425°F (220°C) for 20-25 minutes.
